Closing remarks  by L.Enkh-Amgalan, Deputy Speaker of the State Great Hural of Mongolia at the Second regional seminar for Asia, Pacific parliaments on achieving the SDGs

Ulaanbaatar, May 28, 2019

To our honorable Madam President of the IPU,

Speakers, Deputy Speakers,

members of the parliaments,

to our guest speakers,

to our seminar moderators,

to our guests from Diplomatic corpus and international organizations, representatives of the civil society

Congratulations!

Your active and dynamic participation has made of this seminar a successful event!

On behalf of the State Great Hural of Mongolia, I would like to thank you all for coming and taking part in our seminar entitled: “Second Regional Forum on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals!

I am really happy and feel gratified that this gathering is becoming a tradition that makes this seminar a regional event, a platform which brings together not only the representatives of the legislative body but also of the executive governance as well as civil society.

It is my pleasure that thanks to your contributions, over these 2 days we reviewed the achievement reached in the implementation of the SDGs and suggested ways forward to improve.

We had the opportunity to build on the recommendations identified during the previous seminar and discuss the crucial role that education plays in achieving the SDGs. Education is crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty and helping individuals and communities to improve their health by increasing their knowledge or influencing their attitudes.

The seminar put particular emphasis on how parliaments could promote “environmental literacy” and increase awareness on climate change and disaster risk reduction. The meeting has also highlighted the importance of ensuring that socially and economically marginalized populations are not left behind.

We have just concluded an outcome document outlining key issues discussed and forward-looking recommendations to parliaments to effectively advance the implementation of the SDGs at the national and regional levels.

The seminar also gives an opportunity for participants to be introduced with the Vocational training school where students acquire the skills needed to take advantage of employment opportunities, or create small businesses.

To sum it up, I hope that everyone has learned something from this seminar and nobody left behind.

Again, thank you very much to each and every one of you.

Knowing is not enough, we must apply.

Willing is not enough, we must do!
