Standing Committee on Industrialization Policy conducts on-site inspection at Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod border port

The Standing Committee on Industrialization Policy of the State Great Hural is conducting an on-site inspection at Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod border port as part of an oversight mission on the operations of Erdenes Tavantolgoi JSC’s coal washing plant. The working group, established by the committee’s Resolution No. 05 of 2024, is led by Committee Chair S. Ganbaatar and includes MPs B. Uyanga and P. Munkhtulga, along with Deputy Secretary General of the State Great Hural U. Amarbat.

The delegation is assessing the progress and implementation of parliamentary policies at Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod, a key export hub located 841 km from Ulaanbaatar. Their visit includes an evaluation of the cross-border railway infrastructure, the operations of the "Erdenes Unified Terminal" complex, and coal transportation systems. The committee aims to ensure that parliamentary decisions translate into tangible economic and logistical improvements.

Gashuunsukhait remains one of Mongolia’s most critical economic gateways, playing a significant role in state revenue. The ninth State Great Hural has prioritized long-stalled mega projects, with expectations that these initiatives will yield positive economic outcomes. The newly constructed railway, designed to meet international standards while ensuring environmental sustainability in the Gobi region, has been largely effective. However, local residents have raised concerns about social issues requiring further resolution.

Since its launch in 2022, the "Erdenes Unified Terminal" complex has exported 75.1 million tons of coal, with a target of 30 million tons set for 2025. Currently, 300 to 450 transport vehicles cross into Gantsmod daily, and coal transportation via the exchange market has been operating across four designated routes. Since March 2023, 26.5 million tons of coal have been sold through 117 transactions, with over 40 contractual obligations remaining.

As of now, 432 transport companies with a total of 24,432 vehicles are registered under the Unified Transport System at Gashuunsukhait. Of these, 420 companies with 8,808 vehicles operate under contractual agreements with Erdenes Tavantolgoi JSC, managing both long-haul and short-haul transport operations. Recent coal price fluctuations have led to a 2.3% decline in market value, reducing coal transportation volumes and raising concerns about export reductions. Meanwhile, 4.6 million tons of coal remain stockpiled at Gantsmod port.

The working group’s inspection continues as it explores strategies to mitigate logistical bottlenecks and enhance the efficiency of the railway network, ensuring a smoother and more effective coal export process.
