Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice of the State Great Hural (Parliament) D. Tsogtbaatar met with Sandra Choufani, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Mongolia, today.
Ambassador Choufani expressed gratitude to Chair D. Tsogtbaatar for the meeting and discussed opportunities to strengthen parliamentary cooperation, particularly in legal and legislative areas.
Chair D. Tsogtbaatar praised Canada’s governance as a strong example of best practices and expressed interest in studying its approach to sustainable development. He emphasized his priority to ensure transparency and accountability in judicial operations during his tenure as Chair. He also provided updates on drafting amendments to the Law on Legislation, which are set to be submitted during the 2024 autumn session, and the committee’s commitment to creating a legal framework aligned with Mongolia’s rapidly evolving society and centered on human-focused principles.
Ambassador Choufani highlighted Canada’s foundational human rights policies, noting how its laws and decisions align with these principles. Chair D. Tsogtbaatar acknowledged that the second chapter of Mongolia’s 1992 Constitution guarantees fundamental human rights and freedoms, reflecting the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The two sides exchanged views on enhancing inter-parliamentary collaboration, improving judicial operations, and developing legal frameworks to protect and uphold human rights. They also discussed policy documents related to human rights and their alignment with national laws.
