Chairwoman Kh. Bulgantuya Meets with Members of the British Parliament’s IPU Group

Chairwoman Kh. Bulgantuya of the State Great Hural (Parliament), along with MPs O. Nominchimeg and G. Khosbayar, as well as Secretary-General B. Baasandorj, are attending the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the conference of Secretaries-General of Parliaments in Geneva, Switzerland.

On October 15, 2024, Chairwoman Kh. Bulgantuya and her delegation met with members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) group from the United Kingdom Parliament.

During the meeting, Chairwoman Kh. Bulgantuya expressed her pleasure at meeting representatives elected to the UK House of Commons and members of the House of Lords, following the successful parliamentary elections held by the UK in July. She highlighted that Mongolia’s State Great Hural had also conducted successful parliamentary elections this past June. Notably, under recent amendments to the Constitution of Mongolia, 126 MPs were elected, representing five parties and coalitions, with women comprising 32 members, or 25.4% of the total—a historic high for female representation in the Mongolian parliament. She also mentioned the formal establishment of the Mongolia-UK Friendship Group within the State Great Hural in September.

Chairwoman Kh. Bulgantuya expressed confidence that the previously postponed visit by a UK parliamentary delegation to Mongolia would proceed successfully this time, further strengthening cooperation between the two countries’ legislative bodies.

The head of the UK parliamentary delegation and member of the IPU Governing Council, A. Sobel, expressed his delight in meeting Chairwoman Kh. Bulgantuya and her delegation. He affirmed the UK delegation’s commitment to visiting Mongolia with the aim of understanding Mongolia’s current political, social, and economic situation, emphasizing Mongolia’s dedication to democratic values.

Both sides agreed that this visit would be instrumental in enhancing bilateral cooperation.

On the same day, MP O. Nominchimeg met with representatives from the United Nations Human Rights Council to discuss potential collaboration on human rights and freedom-related issues in Mongolia.
