The 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 13 to 17, 2024, has successfully concluded, gathering over 630 parliamentarians from around 130 member countries. Representing Mongolia were Deputy Chairwoman of the State Great Hural H. Bulgantuya, MPs O. Nominchimeg and G. Khosbayar, and Secretary-General B. Baasandorj.
On October 17, during the IPU Governing Council meeting, elections were held to appoint three new members to the IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians. Among the nine candidates from eight countries, MP O. Nominchimeg of Mongolia was elected, marking her as the first Mongolian parliamentarian to serve on this specialized committee.
The Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, consisting of ten members, had three seats open for election due to term completions in October. The newly elected members, representing Mongolia, Serbia, and Uganda, will serve from 2024 to 2029.
This unique committee is the only international body dedicated solely to defending the rights of parliamentarians, reviewing cases of attacks and violations against parliamentarians and protecting their rights globally. It currently investigates rights violations affecting over 760 parliamentarians from 47 countries, including the case of former Mongolian parliamentarian S. Zorig.
