The 142nd Assembly of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) will convene in May. As a part of the series of preparations for the Assembly, the online plenary session of the IPU Standing Committee on Peace and International Security was held on April 26, 2021.

Started at 20:00 of Ulaanbaatar time and moderated by the IPU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the online plenary of the Standing Committee was attended by Ms. B.Saranchimeg, a member of the State Great Hural (Parliament) of Mongolia. Ms. B.Saranchimeg MP, served between 2018-2020 as a Bureau member of the IPU Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights.

The session was attended by more than 50 representatives of parliaments and other international organizations and was opened by Mr. Oscar Fernandez Taranco, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support. In his remarks, he noted the importance of overcoming and rebuilding the Covid-19 epidemic as soon as possible and stressed that the building, maintaining and strengthening peace in the world will remain as an integral part of this process.

The Standing Committee approved the summary record of the Committee’s session held during 141st IPU Assembly in 2019 and held a discussion on the main topic of the 142nd IPU Assembly. The main theme of the 142nd Assembly will be "Overcoming the pandemic today and building a better tomorrow: the role of parliaments " and the participants of the Standing Committee session have debated under two subthemes. 

A series of sessions and meetings in preparation for the 142nd IPU Assembly will be held until 12 May, according to the agenda of the relevant Standing committees and representatives of Mongolian parliament will be attended respectively. For an instance, the Standing Committees on Sustainable Development and the United Nations Affairs will hold a joint meeting under the Assembly’s general theme, while the 7 Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians will focus on post pandemic recovery and trend towards youth. The Standing Committee on UN Affairs will hold a panel discussion on the occasion of the 75anniversary of the United Nations and Forum of Women parliamentarians will debate on Gender-related impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and prioritizing parliamentary action for gender-responsive recovery.
